Real myst library books8/8/2023 ![]() ![]() There's certainly some kind of special grammar in addition to the specialized vocabulary being literate in the D'ni language doesn't automatically make you literate in the language of the Books Gehn could read them well enough, but had no confidence in his ability to construct phrases himself, copying whole segments out of other books, which is why his Ages were so shoddy. Likewise, when Gehn demonstrates the writing of an Age to Atrus, the first thing he writes is "a D'ni character-the word 'island.'" We also see Atrus writing in Myst and Riven, and the way his pen moves seems to be left-to-right, english-style script, similar to D'ni, not the interlocking circles we see in Exile, or even the calligraphic form used in D'ni signatures and seals. I know the novels and games are the least reliable sources for information on the Myst canon, but in realMyst, we can see the Linking Book is written in D'ni script (though the actual text is almost certainly not accurate), and it stands to reason Linking and Descriptive Books would use the same language, and in The Book of Atrus, when Anna teaches the first garohevtee to Atrus, it's in the context of teaching him the D'ni language, and the only thing that seems to give him pause is the definition, not the script. Those symbols come from Narayan itself, so it's unlikely that the D'ni used them when creating Books. Often they didn't even have an image in the panel to go by to determine the viability of an Age. One thing we do know is that the panel remains blank until the link is used for the first time, which is one reason why the Guild of Maintainers had extensive testing equipment for new Ages. We have no idea what they do look like, but I like to imagine them as resembling Mayan heiroglyphs.Īnd how is the linking panel on the first page created?Īside from being part of the process of creating a Book, it's not clear if it's a specific process or if it just manifests naturally once the rest of the book is complete. So they're not written with the D'ni alphabet. They're a special set of words with unique symbols, representing not just labels and ideas, but a synthesis of the two. Meaning: What do the literal pages look like, if you were to open it up? Is it prose, written in D'ni? Is there a certain syntax or format.ĭescriptive Books are written with " garohevtee," literally "Great Words." (Gahro= great, hev = word, tee= plural).
